Two drivers flashed by the westbound camera on the A35 at Chideock took up the fight in the courts after claiming road markings which corroborate the camera evidence were incorrect. Magistrates have yet to come to a decision in one of the cases involving a former police officer but Paul Snowball, of Portland , is delighted after his case was thrown out due to a lack of evidence before a trial was due to start. District Crown Prosecutor Roger Hall said: The same camera was at the centre of controversy when it emerged it had illegally caught thousands of motorists between and due to an administrative blunder, which referred to the A35 junction with Seatown Road when it should have been Duck Street. Last month the camera was set on fire in an arson attack and had to be replaced. He received a notice of prosecution shortly after informing him he had been clocked at 38mph. Mr Snowball visited Chideock with a tape measure and found the distance between the first and second marking was 4ft 6ins. He later measured the 19 other markings which he found were anything between 4ft 8ins and 5ft apart. After the case was dismissed, Mr Snowball — who did not attend the hearing due to a mix-up over dates — said:

Kathy Bragg Leave a comment Archaeology in Marlow welcomed John Leighfield to Liston Hall on Thursday November 13th, when he presented a fascinating history of maps from their earliest beginnings up to the present day. He illustrated his lecture with a slide show of maps through the ages and brought copies of many of these maps which the audience had the opportunity to examine after the talk. Leighfield covered the development of maps over four millennia, from a Bronze Age rock carving, through the revolution brought about by the printing press and right up to the digital maps made possible by the Internet today.
His first slide showed the oldest known map, the Bedolina Map. The map is cut into a rock located in the Park of Seradina in Northern Italy. It dates from the Bronze Age, about the middle of the second millennium BC. Moving on, he showed a picture of a Babylonian world Map on a clay tablet dating from about BC. The orientation is different, with East at the top of the map, and this reminds us that the convention of putting North at the top was not established until later.
It was drawn in ink and hand-coloured on two skins of vellum. In the 14th Century, only one manuscript map could be produced at a time. However, the invention of the printing press in the 15th Century was about to revolutionize the making of maps. Christopher Saxton used the new technology to produce one of the first regional atlases in the world. Saxton was funded by Thomas Seckford, with the backing of Queen Elizabeth, whose authority Saxton used to gain access to useful vantage points throughout the land.
He travelled throughout England and Wales, surveying and drawing.
Community Speed Watch schemes involves trained volunteers monitoring the speeds of vehicles with approved, hand-held speed measurement devices. Where vehicle speeds are ‘inappropriate’, a letter is sent to the registered keeper by the police with the aim of encouraging them to reduce their speed in future. The community-driven road safety initiative has been launched across West Mercia following a pilot in Crowle, near Worcester.
The scheme is being supported by the Safer Roads Partnership team within Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police , but will be managed and run by volunteers.

A DRIVER who was six times over the drug limit when causing the death by dangerous driving of a year-old grandmother has been jailed for eight years and eight months. Ryan Reardon, 34, was driving his van at twice the speed limit along Chepstow Road, Newport, on Monday, June 5, at around 7pm when he went into the other side of the road, colliding head on with another car “at such force that both vehicles raised up in the air”. Christine Rowe, 70, was pronounced dead at the scene while her husband of fifty years Brian, who suffers from memory loss, was taken to hospital with multiple rib fractures, which led to further breathing complications.
Mr Rowe was only discharged from hospital on July 8, the court heard. Sentencing him to eight years and eight months in prison at Cardiff Crown Court this morning, Judge Eleri Rees said Reardon has previous convictions of a similar nature. Reardon, of Beech Grove, Oakdale, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injuries by dangerous driving, possession of cocaine and failing to stop after an accident. Gwent Police Sargent Draper said: His imprisonment should be a warning to those who decide to take illegal substances and drive.
His actions were simply deplorable. The family of Mrs Christine Rowe have released the following statement: Reardon proceeded onto the A48 towards Newport city centre and George Street. He drove to the wrong side of a keep left sign on Chepstow Road, and was travelling too fast when he crashed straight into Mr and Mrs Rowe.
The design is intended to use a single upper thread caught caught by a lower looper or revolving hook. The thread-loop having been caught and twisted half a revolution, or one hundred and eighty degrees between each stitch is then released into the next loop of thread. This method is repeated to form the continuing stitch from the single upper thread.
